Back from vacation

My family and I have just returned from a glorious vacation to Ocean City, NJ. I'll have a blog or two on the vacation as well as some thoughts about Ocean City itself and its history when I get my thoughts sorted out.

While I was there, I picked up a book (Dumbing Us Down) by former public-school teacher and current homeschooling advocate John Taylor Gatto. I hadn't read anything of his before (though his works had often been recommended to me), and I was pretty impressed with this particular book (despite his views on the inherent goodness of democracy). More on this later, too.

My only complaints about OC being a dry town is that one can't drink outside (the house we rented had a porch, too) and that restaurants can't be BYOB. Other than that, I don't mind at all and certainly the law has preserved OC from some of the problems that have afflicted (for example) Wildwood. I would even like to see the old blue laws resurrected.
